A Grad rocket fired from Gaza hit Beersheva last week. The IDF launched heavy retaliatory air strikes. How do you explain this wave of escalation between Israel and Hamas? Is this, too, linked to the Arab revolutionary wave?
A. The cycle of violence, per se, is probably not unusual. This time, as in the past, it worked as follows: Israeli forces, patrolling on the Gazan side of the border fence against attempts to place explosive charges along the fence, killed several suspects. Hamas retaliated with rockets and mortars, the IDF responded from the air, etc. What was new here was the Grad rocket with its 40 km. range that was aimed at Beersheva. This hadn’t happened since Operation Cast Lead in January 2009, more than two years ago.
